1 gOh give thanks to the Lord, hfor he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let ithe redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has jredeemed from trouble1
3 and kgathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 Some lwandered in desert wastes,
finding no way mto a city to dwell in;
5 hungry and thirsty,
their soul nfainted within them.
6 Then they ocried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by pa straight way
till they reached ma city to dwell in.
8 qLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he rsatisfies the longing soul,
sand the hungry soul he fills with good things.
10 tSome sat in darkness and in uthe shadow of death,
prisoners in vaffliction and in irons,
11 for they whad rebelled against the words of God,
and xspurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
they fell down, ywith none to help.
13 zThen they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of adarkness and the shadow of death,
and bburst their bonds apart.
15 cLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16 For he dshatters the doors of bronze
and cuts in two the bars of iron.
17 Some were efools through their sinful ways,
and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
18 fthey loathed any kind of food,
and they gdrew near to hthe gates of death.
19 iThen they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
20 He jsent out his word and khealed them,
and ldelivered them from their destruction.
21 mLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them noffer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
23 Some qwent down to the sea in ships,
doing business on the great waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he rcommanded and sraised the stormy wind,
which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
their courage tmelted away in their evil plight;
27 they reeled and ustaggered like drunken men
and vwere at their wits’ end.2
28 wThen they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
29 He xmade the storm be still,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad that the waters3 were quiet,
and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 yLet them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
32 Let them zextol him in athe congregation of the people,
and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He bturns rivers into a desert,
springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 ca fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35 He dturns a desert into pools of water,
ea parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry dwell,
and they establish fa city to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
and get a fruitful yield.
38 gBy his blessing they multiply greatly,
and he does not let their livestock diminish.
39 When they are diminished and brought low
through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 hhe pours contempt on princes
and imakes them wander jin trackless wastes;
41 but khe raises up the needy out of affliction
and lmakes their families like flocks.
42 mThe upright see it and are glad,
and nall wickedness shuts its mouth.
43 oWhoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.
A Song. A Psalm of David.
1 pMy heart is steadfast, O God!
I will sing and make melody with all my being!4
2 Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
3 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
4 For your steadfast love is great qabove the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!
6 rThat your beloved ones may be delivered,
give salvation by your right hand and answer me!
7 God has promised in his holiness:5
“With exultation I will divide up Shechem
and portion out the Valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet,
Judah my scepter.
9 Moab is my washbasin;
upon Edom I cast my shoe;
sover Philistia I shout in triumph.”
10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Have you not rejected us, O God?
You do not go out, O God, with our armies.
12 Oh grant us help against the foe,
for vain is the salvation of man!
13 With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes.
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1 tBe not silent, O uGod of my praise!
2 For wicked and vdeceitful mouths are opened against me,
speaking against me with lying tongues.
3 They encircle me with words of hate,
and attack me wwithout cause.
4 In return for my love they xaccuse me,
but I ygive myself to prayer.6
5 So they zreward me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.
6 aAppoint a wicked man bagainst him;
let an accuser stand cat his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
let his dprayer be counted as sin!
8 May his edays be few;
may fanother take his goffice!
9 May his hchildren be fatherless
and his wife a widow!
10 May his children iwander about and beg,
jseeking food far from the ruins they inhabit!
11 May kthe creditor seize all that he has;
may kstrangers plunder the fruits of his toil!
12 Let there be none to lextend kindness to him,
nor any to mpity his fatherless children!
13 May his nposterity be cut off;
may his oname be blotted out in the second generation!
14 May pthe iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord,
and let not the sin of his mother be qblotted out!
15 rLet them be before the Lord continually,
that he may scut off the memory of them from the earth!
16 For he did not remember to show kindness,
but pursued tthe poor and needy
and uthe brokenhearted, to put them to death.
17 vHe loved to curse; let curses come7 upon him!
He did not delight in blessing; may it be far8 from him!
18 He wclothed himself with cursing as his coat;
may it xsoak9 into his body like water,
like oil into his bones!
19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around him,
like a belt that he puts on every day!
20 May this be the reward of my yaccusers from the Lord,
of those who speak evil against my life!
21 But you, O God my Lord,
deal on my behalf zfor your name’s sake;
because your asteadfast love is good, deliver me!
22 For I am bpoor and needy,
and my heart is stricken within me.
23 I am gone like ca shadow at evening;
I am dshaken off like a locust.
24 My knees are weak ethrough fasting;
my fbody has become gaunt, with no fat.
25 I am gan object of scorn to my accusers;
when they see me, they hwag their heads.
26 iHelp me, O Lord my God!
Save me according to your steadfast love!
27 Let them jknow that this is your hand;
you, O Lord, have done it!
28 kLet them curse, but you will bless!
They arise and are put to shame, but lyour servant will be glad!
29 May my accusers be mclothed with dishonor;
may they nbe wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak!
30 With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
I will opraise him in the midst of the throng.
31 For he stands pat the right hand of the needy one,
to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.
A Psalm of David.
1 qThe Lord says to my Lord:
r“Sit at my right hand,
2 The Lord sends forth ufrom Zion
vyour mighty scepter.
wRule in the midst of your enemies!
3 xYour people will yoffer themselves freely
from the womb of the morning,
the dew of your youth will be yours.12
and will dnot change his mind,
after the order of hMelchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your iright hand;
he will jshatter kings on kthe day of his wrath.
6 He will lexecute judgment among the nations,
mfilling them with corpses;
over the wide earth.
7 He will odrink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head.
I qwill give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of rthe upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the sworks of the Lord,
tstudied by all who delight in them.
3 uFull of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his vrighteousness endures forever.
4 He has wcaused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he xremembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are ytrustworthy;
8 they are zestablished forever and ever,
to be performed with afaithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent bredemption to his people;
he has ccommanded his covenant forever.
dHoly and awesome is his name!
10 eThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have fa good understanding.
His gpraise endures forever!
iBlessed is the man who fears the Lord,
who jgreatly delights in his commandments!
2 His koffspring will be mighty in the land;
lthe generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 mWealth and riches are in his house,
and his nrighteousness endures forever.
4 Light dawns in the darkness ofor the upright;
he is gracious, merciful, and prighteous.
5 It is well with the man who qdeals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
6 For the righteous will rnever be moved;
she will be remembered forever.
7 He is not tafraid of bad news;
his uheart is firm, vtrusting in the Lord.
8 His heart is steady;16 he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
9 He has wdistributed freely; he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever;
his xhorn is exalted in honor.
10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;
he ygnashes his teeth and zmelts away;
athe desire of the wicked will perish!
1 bPraise the Lord!
cPraise, O dservants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!
2 eBlessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
3 fFrom the rising of the sun to its setting,
4 The Lord is ihigh above all nations,
and his jglory above the heavens!
5 kWho is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
6 who llooks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
7 He mraises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
8 to make them nsit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
9 He ogives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
bPraise the Lord!
1 When pIsrael went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from qa people of strange language,
2 Judah became his rsanctuary,
Israel his dominion.
3 sThe sea looked and fled;
tJordan turned back.
4 uThe mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
5 What vails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?
7 wTremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 who turns xthe rock into ya pool of water,
zthe flint into a spring of water.
1 aNot to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
bfor the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
2 Why should the nations say,
c“Where is their God?”
3 dOur God is in the heavens;
ehe does all that he pleases.
4 fTheir idols are silver and gold,
gthe work of human hands.
5 They have mouths, hbut do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
6 They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
7 They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
and they do not make a sound in their throat.
8 iThose who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.
9 O jIsrael,17 ktrust in the Lord!
He is their lhelp and their shield.
10 O jhouse of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and mtheir shield.
11 You nwho fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
he will bless othe house of Israel;
he will bless othe house of Aaron;
13 he will pbless those who fear the Lord,
qboth the small and the great.
14 May the Lord rgive you increase,
you and your children!
15 May syou be blessed by the Lord,
twho made heaven and earth!
16 The heavens are the Lord’s heavens,
but the earth he has given to the children of man.
17 uThe dead do not praise the Lord,
nor do any who go down into vsilence.
18 But wwe will bless the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
xPraise the Lord!
1 I ylove the Lord, because he has zheard
my voice and my pleas for mercy.
2 Because he ainclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
3 bThe snares of death encompassed me;
the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
4 Then cI called on the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”
5 dGracious is the Lord, and erighteous;
our God is fmerciful.
6 The Lord preserves gthe simple;
when hI was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return, O my soul, to your irest;
for the Lord has jdealt bountifully with you.
8 For kyou have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling;
9 I will walk before the Lord
lin the land of the living.
10 mI believed, neven when18 I spoke:
“I am greatly afflicted”;
11 oI said in my alarm,
p“All mankind are liars.”
12 What shall I qrender to the Lord
for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up rthe cup of salvation
and scall on the name of the Lord,
14 I will tpay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 uPrecious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his vsaints.
16 O Lord, I am your wservant;
I am your servant, xthe son of your maidservant.
You have yloosed my bonds.
17 I will zoffer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and scall on the name of the Lord.
18 I will tpay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in athe courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
bPraise the Lord!
1 cPraise the Lord, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
2 For dgreat is his steadfast love toward us,
and ethe faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
bPraise the Lord!
1 fOh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 gLet Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
3 gLet the house of Aaron say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
4 gLet those who fear the Lord say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
5 hOut of my distress I icalled on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me jfree.
6 kThe Lord is on my side; lI will not fear.
What can man do to me?
7 mThe Lord is on my side as my helper;
I shall nlook in triumph on those who hate me.
8 oIt is better to take refuge in the Lord
pthan to trust in man.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
pthan to trust in princes.
10 qAll nations surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
12 rThey surrounded me like bees;
they went out like sa fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
13 I was tpushed hard,19 so that I was falling,
but the Lord helped me.
14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
uhe has become my salvation.
15 Glad songs of salvation
are in the tents of the righteous:
v“The right hand of the Lord wdoes valiantly,
16 the right hand of the Lord exalts,
the right hand of the Lord wdoes valiantly!”
17 xI shall not die, but I shall live,
and yrecount the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord has zdisciplined me severely,
but he has not given me over to death.
19 aOpen to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
bthe righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that cyou have answered me
uand have become my salvation.
22 dThe stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.20
23 This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success!
26 eBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We fbless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has made ghis light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
up to hthe horns of the altar!
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God; I will iextol you.
29 jOh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!
Aleph
1 21 Blessed are those whose kway is blameless,

2 Blessed are those who mkeep his ntestimonies,

3 who also pdo no wrong,
but walk in his ways!
4 You have commanded your qprecepts
to be kept diligently.
5 Oh that my ways may rbe steadfast

and fix my eyes on your eways.
16 I will fdelight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.
Gimel
17 gDeal bountifully with your servant,
hthat I may live and keep your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.
19 I am ia sojourner on the earth;
jhide not your commandments from me!
20 My soul is consumed with klonging
for your rules24 at all times.
21 You rebuke lthe insolent, maccursed ones,
who nwander from your commandments.
22 Take away from me oscorn and contempt,
pfor I have kept your testimonies.
23 Even though qprinces sit plotting against me,
your servant will rmeditate on your statutes.
24 Your testimonies are my sdelight;
they are my tcounselors.
Daleth
25 uMy soul clings to the dust;

28 bMy soul melts away for sorrow;

29 Put false ways far from me
and graciously cteach me your law!
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
I dset your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
elet me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
He
33 gTeach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
and I will keep it hto the end.26
34 iGive me understanding, that I may keep your law
and observe it with my whole heart.
35 jLead me in the path of your commandments,
for I kdelight in it.
36 lIncline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to mselfish gain!
37 nTurn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
and ogive me life in your ways.
38 pConfirm to your servant your promise,
qthat you may be feared.
39 Turn away the rreproach that I dread,
for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I slong for your precepts;
tin your righteousness give me life!
Waw
41 Let your usteadfast love come to me, O Lord,
your salvation vaccording to your promise;
42 then wshall I have an answer for him rwho taunts me,
for I trust in your word.
43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
for my xhope is in your rules.
44 I will keep your law continually,
forever and ever,
45 and I shall walk yin a wide place,
for I have zsought your precepts.
46 I will also speak of your testimonies abefore kings
and shall not be put to shame,
47 for I bfind my delight in your commandments,
which I love.
48 I will clift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love,
and I will dmeditate on your statutes.
Zayin
49 Remember eyour word to your servant,
in which you have made me fhope.
50 This is gmy comfort in my affliction,
that your promise hgives me life.
51 iThe insolent utterly deride me,
but I do not jturn away from your law.
52 When I think of your rules from of old,
I take comfort, O Lord.
53 kHot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,
who forsake your law.
54 Your statutes have been my songs
in the house of my lsojourning.
55 I mremember your name in the night, O Lord,
and keep your law.
56 This blessing has fallen to me,
that nI have kept your precepts.
Heth
57 oThe Lord is my portion;
I promise to keep your words.

62 At umidnight I rise to praise you,

71 It is jgood for me that I was afflicted,
that I might learn your statutes.
72 kThe law of your mouth is better to me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

84 gHow long must your servant endure?27
hWhen will you judge those who persecute me?
85 iThe insolent have jdug pitfalls for me;

86 All your commandments are ksure;
they persecute me lwith falsehood; mhelp me!
87 They have almost made an end of me on earth,
but I have not forsaken your precepts.

90 Your pfaithfulness endures to all generations;
you have qestablished the earth, and it rstands fast.
91 By your sappointment they stand this day,
for all things are your servants.
92 If your law had not been my tdelight,
I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have ugiven me life.
94 I am yours; save me,

95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,

96 I have seen a limit to all perfection,
but your commandment is exceedingly wbroad.

117 fHold me up, that I may be safe
and have regard for your statutes continually!
118 You gspurn all who hgo astray from your statutes,
for their cunning is in vain.
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like idross,
therefore jI love your testimonies.
120 My flesh ktrembles for fear of you,
and I am afraid of your judgments.

121 I have done what is just and right;
do not leave me to my oppressors.

let not mthe insolent oppress me.
123 My neyes long for your salvation
and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.
124 Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,
and oteach me your statutes.
125 I am your pservant; qgive me understanding,
that I may know your testimonies!
126 It is time for the Lord to act,
for your law has been broken.
127 Therefore I rlove your commandments
above gold, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;
I hate every sfalse way.

129 Your testimonies are twonderful;
therefore my soul ukeeps them.
130 The unfolding of your words gives light;
it imparts vunderstanding to the simple.
131 I wopen my mouth and xpant,
because I ylong for your commandments.
132 zTurn to me and be gracious to me,
as is your way with those who love your name.
133 aKeep steady my steps according to your promise,
and let no iniquity bget dominion over me.
134 cRedeem me from man’s oppression,
that I may keep your precepts.

and eteach me your statutes.
136 My eyes fshed streams of tears,
because people gdo not keep your law.

137 hRighteous are you, O Lord,
and right are your rules.
138 You have appointed your testimonies in irighteousness
and in all jfaithfulness.
139 My kzeal consumes me,
because my foes forget your words.
140 Your promise is well ltried,
and your servant mloves it.
141 I am small and despised,
yet I do not nforget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is righteous forever,
and your law is otrue.
143 Trouble and anguish have found me out,
but your commandments are my pdelight.

I will tkeep your statutes.

that I may observe your testimonies.
147 I rise before udawn and cry for help;
I vhope in your words.
148 My eyes are awake before wthe watches of the night,
that I may meditate on your promise.
149 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;
O Lord, xaccording to your justice ygive me life.
150 They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;
they are far from your law.
151 But zyou are near, O Lord,
and all your commandments are atrue.
152 Long have I known from your testimonies
that you have bfounded them forever.

hfor they do not seek your statutes.

fgive me life according to your rules.
157 jMany are my persecutors and my adversaries,
but I do not kswerve from your testimonies.
158 I look at lthe faithless with mdisgust,
because they do not keep your commands.

and every one of your qrighteous rules endures forever.

but my heart tstands in awe of your words.

like one who ufinds great spoil.

but I love vyour law.
164 Seven times a day I praise you
for your qrighteous rules.
165 Great wpeace have those who love your law;
xnothing can make them stumble.
166 I yhope for your salvation, O Lord,
and I do your commandments.

I vlove them exceedingly.
168 I keep your precepts and testimonies,

for you fteach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your word,
for gall your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have hchosen your precepts.
174 I ilong for your salvation, O Lord,
and your law is my jdelight.
175 Let my soul live and praise you,
and let your rules help me.
176 I have kgone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant,
for I do not lforget your commandments.
A Song of mAscents.
1 In my distress I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.
2 Deliver me, O Lord,
from lying lips,
from a deceitful tongue.
3 What shall be given to you,
nand what more shall be done to you,
you deceitful tongue?
with glowing qcoals of the broom tree!
5 Woe to me, that I sojourn in rMeshech,
that I dwell among sthe tents of tKedar!
6 Too long have I had my dwelling
among those who hate peace.
7 uI am for peace,
but when I speak, they are for war!
A Song of mAscents.
1 I vlift up my eyes to wthe hills.
From where does my help come?
2 xMy help comes from the Lord,
who ymade heaven and earth.
3 He will not zlet your foot be moved;
he who akeeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your bshade on your cright hand.
6 dThe sun shall not estrike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will akeep you from all evil;
he will akeep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your fgoing out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
A Song of mAscents. Of David.
1 I was glad when they said to me,
g“Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
2 Our feet have been standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem!
3 Jerusalem—hbuilt as a city
that is ibound firmly together,
4 to which the tribes jgo up,
the tribes of the Lord,
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
5 There lthrones for judgment were set,
the thrones of the house of David.
6 mPray for the peace of Jerusalem!
“May they be secure who love you!
7 Peace be within your nwalls
and security within your ntowers!”
8 For my brothers and companions’ sake
I will say, o“Peace be within you!”
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pseek your good.
A Song of mAscents.
1 To you I qlift up my eyes,
O you who are renthroned in the heavens!
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he has mercy upon us.
3 sHave mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of tcontempt.
4 Our soul has had more than enough
of uthe scorn of vthose who are at ease,
of the contempt of wthe proud.
A Song of mAscents. Of David.
1 xIf it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
ylet Israel now say—
2 if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
when people rose up against us,
3 then they would have zswallowed us up alive,
when their anger was kindled against us;
4 then athe flood would have bswept us away,
the torrent would have gone cover us;
5 then over us would have gone
the raging waters.
6 Blessed be the Lord,
who has not given us
as prey to their teeth!
7 We have escaped like a bird
from dthe snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
and we have escaped!
8 eOur help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
A Song of mAscents.
1 Those who ftrust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which gcannot be moved, but abides forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so hthe Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
3 For ithe scepter of wickedness shall not jrest
on kthe land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous lstretch out
their hands to do wrong.
4 mDo good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are nupright in their hearts!
5 But those who oturn aside to their pcrooked ways
the Lord will lead away with qevildoers!
rPeace be upon Israel!
A Song of mAscents.
1 When the Lord srestored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who tdream.
2 Then our umouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
v“The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.
4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
5 wThose who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
6 He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.
A Song of mAscents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord xwatches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious ytoil;
3 Behold, bchildren are a heritage from the Lord,
cthe fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of da warrior
are the children31 of one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
A Song of mAscents.
1 fBlessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
who gwalks in his ways!
2 You hshall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.
3 Your wife will be like ia fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like jolive shoots
around your table.
4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.
5 kThe Lord bless you lfrom Zion!
May you see mthe prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life!
6 May you see your nchildren’s children!
oPeace be upon Israel!
A Song of mAscents.
1 “Greatly33 have they pafflicted me qfrom my youth”—
rlet Israel now say—
2 “Greatly have they pafflicted me qfrom my youth,
syet they have not prevailed against me.
3 tThe plowers plowed uupon my back;
they made long their furrows.”
4 The Lord is righteous;
he has cut vthe cords of the wicked.
5 May all who hate Zion
be wput to shame and turned backward!
6 Let them be like xthe grass on the housetops,
which ywithers before it grows up,
7 with which the reaper does not fill his hand
nor the binder of sheaves his arms,
8 nor do those who pass by say,
a“The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
We bbless you in the name of the Lord!”
A Song of mAscents.
1 Out of cthe depths I cry to you, O Lord!
2 O Lord, hear my voice!
dLet your ears be attentive
to ethe voice of my pleas for mercy!
3 If you, O Lord, should fmark iniquities,
O Lord, who could gstand?
4 But with you there is hforgiveness,
ithat you may be feared.
5 I jwait for the Lord, kmy soul waits,
and lin his word I hope;
6 my soul mwaits for the Lord
more than nwatchmen for othe morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, phope in the Lord!
For qwith the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
8 And he will rredeem Israel
from all his iniquities.
A Song of mAscents. Of David.
1 O Lord, my heart is not slifted up;
my eyes are not traised too high;
I do not uoccupy myself with things
too great and vtoo marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned wchild with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 xO Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
A Song of mAscents.
1 Remember, O Lord, in David’s favor,
all ythe hardships he endured,
2 how he swore to the Lord
and zvowed to athe Mighty One of Jacob,
3 “I will not enter my house
or get into my bed,
4 I will not bgive sleep to my eyes
or slumber to my eyelids,
5 until I cfind a place for the Lord,
a dwelling place for athe Mighty One of Jacob.”
6 Behold, we heard of it in dEphrathah;
we found it in ethe fields of Jaar.
7 “Let us go to his dwelling place;
8 hArise, O Lord, and go to your iresting place,
you and the ark of your jmight.
9 Let your kpriests be lclothed with righteousness,
and let your msaints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
11 pThe Lord swore to David a sure oath
qfrom which he will not turn back:
r“One of the sons of your body34
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their sons also forever
shall ssit on your throne.”
13 For the Lord has tchosen Zion;
he has udesired it for his dwelling place:
14 “This is my vresting place forever;
here I will wdwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly xbless her provisions;
I will ysatisfy her poor with bread.
16 Her zpriests I will clothe with salvation,
and her zsaints will shout for joy.
17 There I will make aa horn to sprout for David;
I have prepared ba lamp for cmy anointed.
18 His enemies I will dclothe with shame,
but on him his crown will shine.”
A Song of mAscents. Of David.
1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when ebrothers dwell in unity!35
2 It is like the precious foil on gthe head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on hthe collar of his robes!
3 It is like ithe dew of jHermon,
which falls on kthe mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord lhas commanded the blessing,
life forevermore.
A Song of mAscents.
1 Come, bless the Lord, all you mservants of the Lord,
who nstand oby night in the house of the Lord!
2 pLift up your hands to qthe holy place
and bless the Lord!
3 May the Lord rbless you sfrom Zion,
he who tmade heaven and earth!
1 uPraise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord,
give praise, O vservants of the Lord,
2 who nstand in the house of the Lord,
in wthe courts of the house of our God!
3 Praise the Lord, for xthe Lord is good;
sing to his name, yfor it is pleasant!36
4 For the Lord has zchosen Jacob for himself,
Israel as his aown possession.
5 For I know that bthe Lord is great,
and that our Lord is above all gods.
6 cWhatever the Lord pleases, he does,
in heaven and on earth,
in the seas and all deeps.
7 dHe it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth,
who emakes lightnings for the rain
and brings forth the wind from his fstorehouses.
8 He it was who gstruck down the firstborn of Egypt,
both of man and of beast;
9 who in your midst, O Egypt,
sent hsigns and wonders
against Pharaoh and all his servants;
10 iwho struck down many nations
and killed mighty kings,
11 jSihon, king of the Amorites,
and kOg, king of Bashan,
and lall the kingdoms of Canaan,
12 and mgave their land as a heritage,
a heritage to his people Israel.
13 nYour name, O Lord, endures forever,
oyour renown,37 O Lord, throughout all ages.
14 pFor the Lord will vindicate his people
and qhave compassion on his servants.
15 rThe idols of the nations are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but do not speak;
they have eyes, but do not see;
17 they have ears, but do not hear,
nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them become like them,
so do all who trust in them.
19 sO house of Israel, bless the Lord!
O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord tfrom Zion,
he who udwells in Jerusalem!
vPraise the Lord!
1 wGive thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
xfor his steadfast love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to ythe God of gods,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to ythe Lord of lords,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
