Leviticus 2–4

Laws for Grain Offerings

When anyone brings a pgrain offering as an offering to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour. qHe shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it and bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests. And he shall take from it a handful of the fine flour and oil, with all of its frankincense, and the priest shall burn this as its rmemorial portion on the altar, a food soffering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. But the trest of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; uit is a most holy part of the Lord’s food offerings.

When you bring a grain offering baked in the oven as an offering, it shall be vunleavened loaves of fine flour mixed with oil or unleavened wafers smeared with oil. And if your offering is a grain offering wbaked on a griddle, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mixed with oil. You shall break it in pieces and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. And if your offering is a grain offering cooked in a pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. And you shall bring the grain offering that is made of these things to the Lord, and when it is presented to the priest, he shall bring it to the altar. And the priest shall take from the grain offering its memorial portion and burn this on the altar, a food xoffering with a ypleasing aroma to the Lord. 10 But the zrest of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; zit is a most holy part of the Lord’s food offerings.

11 No grain offering that you bring to the Lord shall be made with aleaven, for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey as a food offering to the Lord. 12 bAs an offering of firstfruits you may bring them to the Lord, but they shall not be offered on the altar for a pleasing aroma. 13 You cshall season all your grain offerings with salt. You shall not let the dsalt of the covenant with your God be missing from your grain offering; ewith all your offerings you shall offer salt.

14 If you offer a grain offering of firstfruits to the Lord, you shall offer for the grain offering of your firstfruits fresh fears, roasted with fire, crushed new grain. 15 And gyou shall put oil on it and lay frankincense on it; it is a grain offering. 16 And the priest shall burn as its hmemorial portion some of the crushed grain and some of the oil with all of its frankincense; it is a food offering to the Lord.

Laws for Peace Offerings

If his offering is ia sacrifice of peace offering, if he offers an animal from the herd, male or female, jhe shall offer it kwithout blemish before the Lord. And lhe shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and kill it at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall throw the blood against the sides of the altar. And from the sacrifice of the peace offering, as a food offering to the Lord, he shall offer mthe fat covering the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, nand the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins, and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove with the kidneys. Then Aaron’s sons oshall burn it on the altar on top of the burnt offering, which is on the wood on the fire; it is a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

If his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering to the Lord is an animal from the flock, male or female, he shall offer it kwithout blemish. If he offers a lamb for his offering, then he shall offer it before the Lord, lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it in front of the tent of meeting; and Aaron’s sons shall throw its blood against the sides of the altar. Then from the sacrifice of the peace offering he shall offer as a food offering to the Lord its fat; he shall remove the whole pfat tail, cut off close to the backbone, and the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails 10 and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove qwith the kidneys. 11 And the priest shall burn it on the altar as ra food offering to the Lord.

12 If his offering is a goat, then he shall offer it before the Lord 13 and lay his hand on its head and kill it in front of the tent of meeting, and the sons of Aaron shall throw its blood against the sides of the altar. 14 Then he shall offer from it, as his offering for a food offering to the Lord, the fat covering the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails 15 and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove qwith the kidneys. 16 And the priest shall burn them on the altar as a rfood offering with a pleasing aroma. sAll fat is the Lord’s. 17 It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither sfat nor tblood.

Laws for Sin Offerings

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the people of Israel, saying, uIf anyone sins unintentionally1 in any of the Lord’s commandments vabout things not to be done, and does any one of them, if it is the anointed priest who wsins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed xa bull from the herd without blemish to the Lord for a sin offering. He shall bring the bull to the yentrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord and lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before the Lord. And the anointed priest zshall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it into the tent of meeting, and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and zsprinkle part of the blood seven times before the Lord in front of the veil of the sanctuary. And the priest ashall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the Lord that is in the tent of meeting, and ball the rest of the blood of the bull he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And all the fat of the bull of the sin offering he shall remove from it, cthe fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails dand the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove with the kidneys 10 (just as these are taken from the ox of the sacrifice of the peace offerings); and the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering. 11 But ethe skin of the bull and all its flesh, with its head, its legs, its entrails, and its dung 12 all the rest of the bullhe shall carry foutside the camp to a clean place, to the ash heap, and shall gburn it up on a fire of wood. On the ash heap it shall be burned up.

13 hIf the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionally2 and ithe thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, and they realize their guilt,3 14 jwhen the sin which they have committed becomes known, the assembly shall offer a bull from the herd for a sin offering and bring it in front of the tent of meeting. 15 And the elders of the congregation kshall lay their hands on the head of the bull before the Lord, and the bull shall be killed before the Lord. 16 Then lthe anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull into the tent of meeting, 17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the veil. 18 And he shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is in the tent of meeting before the Lord, and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 19 And all its fat he shall take from it and burn on the altar. 20 Thus shall he do with the bull. As he did mwith the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this. nAnd the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. 21 And he shall carry the bull foutside the camp and burn it up as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the assembly.

22 When a leader sins, odoing unintentionally any one of all the things that by the commandments of the Lord his God ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt, 23 or pthe sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish, 24 and qshall lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord; it is a sin offering. 25 rThen the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering. 26 And all its fat he shall burn on the altar, like sthe fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings. So tthe priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and he shall be forgiven.

27 If uanyone of the common people sins unintentionally in doing any one of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt, 28 vor the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed. 29 wAnd he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering. 30 And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. 31 And xall its fat he shall remove, yas the fat is removed from the peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar for a zpleasing aroma to the Lord. aAnd the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.

32 If he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring ba female without blemish 33 wand lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering. 34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. 35 And all its fat he shall remove cas the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar, on top of the Lord’s food offerings. dAnd the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.

God Is Our Fortress

God is our crefuge and strength,

a very dpresent2 help in etrouble.

Therefore we will not fear fthough the earth gives way,

though the mountains be moved into gthe heart of the sea,

the holy khabitation of the Most High.

Luke 10

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

After this the Lord appointed xseventy-two1 others and ysent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. zAnd he said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. aTherefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; bbehold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. cCarry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and dgreet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ePeace be to this house! And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, fit will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for gthe laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick in it and say to them, hThe kingdom of God has come near to you. 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 iEven the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that jthe kingdom of God has come near. 12 I tell you, kit will be more bearable on lthat day for Sodom than for that town.

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

13 mWoe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in nTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 oBut it will be more bearable in the judgment for nTyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, pwill you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to qHades.

16 rThe one who hears you hears me, and sthe one who rejects you rejects me, and tthe one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 uThe seventy-two returned with joy, saying, Lord, veven the demons are subject to us in your name! 18 And he said to them, wI saw Satan xfall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority yto tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of zthe enemy, and anothing shall hurt you. 20 bNevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that cyour names are written in heaven.

Jesus Rejoices in the Father’s Will

21 dIn that same hour ehe rejoiced fin the Holy Spirit and said, I thank you, Father, gLord of heaven and earth, that hyou have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and irevealed them to little children; yes, Father, for jsuch was your gracious will.2 22 kAll things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is kexcept the Father, or who the Father is kexcept the Son and anyone lto whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, mBlessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you nthat many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 oAnd behold, a plawyer stood up to qput him to the test, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to rinherit eternal life? 26 He said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read it? 27 And he answered, sYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and tyour neighbor as yourself. 28 And he said to him, You have answered correctly; udo this, and you will live.

29 But he, vdesiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? 30 Jesus replied, A man wwas going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a xpriest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise xa Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a ySamaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and zbound up his wounds, pouring on zoil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two adenarii3 and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back. 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers? 37 He said, The one who showed him mercy. And Jesus said to him, You go, and do likewise.

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus4 entered a village. And a woman named bMartha cwelcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called bMary, who dsat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me. 41 But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are eanxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.5 Mary has chosen fthe good portion, which will not be taken away from her.
